The De Friskbom family has recently come into possession of the Boer War medals of Charles Argaet, great-great-grandfather of Sapphire Coast Anglican College student Amy De Friskbom.
Charles Argaet also served in World War I.
She said she was “very proud and privileged” to be wearing the medals during the Anzac Day march on Wednesday, April 25.
Amy’s mother Warrant Officer Class Two Michelle De Friskbom was also in full uniform and among the official flag party for the Bega march and service.
She is an Army Reservist and works in the career management agency in Canberra.
Mrs De Friskbom has served in the Middle East as well as made a couple of trips into Afghanistan. Her husband Todd has also served in Afghanistan, working with defence contractors operating UAVs.
“It’s hard to explain [what it’s like over there],” Mr De Friskbom said.
“Yes you’re rocketed nightly and shot at, but it’s also time for a reflection on yourself.
“It can be like rolling the dice but you bond really well with your team.”
Amy has previously thanked and honoured other members of her family at Anzac Day in Bega, with a poster at the 2016 service paying tribute to her great-great-grandfather, great-grandfather, “Poppy”, two uncles, her father, mother and brother – all of whom served, or are currently serving, in the military.
