Officials said it was a fine, but very windy day where the gusty conditions proved troublesome for the club’s two senior outfits.
However, club officials said the junior outfits generally fared better with the under 12s providing an example
Fortunately, the junior teams fared generally better, with the Under 12’s team providing the example to the seniors.
While still adjusting to the full sized field and the additional space it provides, the Tathra Under 12’s team worked well together to pull off a 4-1 win over Eden FC.
Coach Dan Bakker said there was great commitment from the juniors, observing that “while the more mature Eden team took a great fight to TUFC, the home team’s positioning, striking capacity, fit midfield and jostling defence put them two steps and three goals ahead of the visitors.”
In the under 16s contest, the Bega Devils mustered a 3-2 result on the day, but officials said it could have easily swayed in favour of the home side.
The hosts scored the first goal of the contest, but Bega quickly bounced back on the attack to take a 2-1 lead.
Tathra levelled in the second half to hold the match at 2-2 and there were some opportunities for both teams heading into the latter stages of play.
However, sustained pressure from Bega saw them score a winning goal and take the points in a close game that finished 3-2.
Club officials were tight-lipped about the reserve grade result, which they said was a “dismal performance”.
The United club played host to Bemboka, but quickly fumbled out of the blocks and never fully recovered as the Braves fired home to a commanding 13-1 result.
Jack Smith was the sole highlight for the home team, who fired the solitary goal just after the break, but officials said the team were already 5-0 down.
The first grade United side were eager to get on the field after the first round bye and took the ground against the Merimbula Grasshoppers.
A resilient defence by the Tathra contingent saw the Grasshoppers sneaking ahead, but just finding one shot on goals to separate the two teams.
Officials said the host team continued to strive hard in the second half, but “the team suffered during a 20-minute period in the middle of the second half” as the Grasshoppers found the net three times in quick succession.
United was unable to counter the attacks and Merimbula secured the 4-0 win, but the club aims to come back stronger when competition resumes on May 6.
