The Bermagui teenager had his first race over the weekend as part of the 300cc championship after an invitation to join the Italian Yamaha team last year.
The 16-year-old finished ninth and 15th respectively in the two opening races at Italy’s Misano World Circuit.
He crashed during qualifying, but still climbed to ninth race, and had a near-crash in race two.
“I was battling inside the top group and made it to second position at one stage [in race two]," Battye said on social media.
“Unfortunately another rider came across the kerb into turn four and t-boned me, i was lucky not to crash.”
He said the collision led him to drop a number of places and despite his best efforts to regain position he finished up in 15th.
“For the weekend i ended the two races in 9th and 15th not what i wanted, but i now know i can run up the front and battle for the championship this year,” he said.
The second round of the series will be held in May.
