8:50am: A NSW Police Media spokesman said a rock fisherman who was pulled from the ocean near Windang Island Saturday night was wearing a life vest.
The spokesman said the Sydney man, believed to be aged in his 40s, was with at least one other person when he slipped off the rocks around 10pm.
He said a number of people witnessed the incident and tried to throw the man a life ring, but he drifted further out to sea.
A rescue helicopter eventually located the man and winched him on board.
He was pronounced dead at the scene. A report will be prepared for the coroner.
8:30am: A NSW Police Media spokesman has now confirmed the fisherman rescued on Saturday night has died.
It’s believed the man had been fishing off rocks at Windang Island with his son around 10pm, when he was swept into the ocean.
7:30am: Emergency services were called to rescue a man who was washed off rocks at Windang Island Saturday night.
Surf Life Saving Illawarra duty officer Anthony Turner said just after 10pm a call was made with reports a person had been washed off rocks into the ocean.
Surf Life Saving crews, NSW Police, NSW Ambulance paramedics and a Toll Rescue helicopter were called in for the search.
The helicopter was able to locate the fisherman before winching him aboard the helicopter.
It is the believed the man may have been wearing a life jacket at the time, and was fishing with another person.
