That’s the key message in the wake of the Tathra bushfire and the extraordinary outpouring of support from all corners of the country.
Local charities St Vincent de Paul and Salvation Army have been inundated with donations of clothes, bedding and other goods – but all services are at capacity and their volunteers struggling to accommodate the volume of items.
Representatives of the Tathra bushfire recovery team said charity agencies have more than they can handle and it was still too early to know what specific items are needed by those residents displaced or otherwise affected.
As a result, while it is wonderful to see the incredible kindness and generosity of people far and wide, the vital message is that monetary donations are what’s required now.
The Bega Valley Shire Council’s Mayoral Appeal Fund is the official avenue for financial donations, which will be distributed equitably to those affected, targeted to specific needs.
Financial donations are tax deductable and can be made via:
- Electronic bank transfer - BSB: 012525/ Account: 837535154
- In person at ANZ Bega Branch
- Credit Card over the phone, call (02) 6499 2345 (between 9:00am-4:30pm)
Donations made over the phone will receive a tax invoice via email. Donations made via bank transfer will be able to provide their transaction details to the Australian Taxation Office.
We thank everyone for their overwhelming generosity, but if you wish to help, dollars are what’s needed most.
If you have been collecting goods you felt worth donating to the cause, one suggestion is to hold a garage sale or similar and then donate the money raised instead.
