Red Cross Narooma is working in partnership with the Ngaardi Women’s Group and Merrimans Local Aboriginal Land Council to make the children’s aspirations for a playground at Wallaga become a reality.
Through this partnership, $70,000 has been already raised in grants so far.
Leading the charge and coordinating the planning is Red Cross worker Cath Thomas, who is excited about the prospect or a playground in the village.
It will be located next to the basketball courts and community hall, but first the sloping ground needs to be levelled.
Ms Thomas is asking for the wider community to come on board with donations of excavation equipment, plants for planting and any other assistance, whether it be time or financial donations.
She can be contacted on 0410 566 048 or at the Red Cross office in Midtown Narooma.
The kids at the Wallaga Lake Koori village gathered together after school on Thursday, February 15 to brainstorm ideas for what they would like to see in a playground.
The children exceeded the Red Cross workers’ expectations with their ideas, which included swings, slides, street lighting, sculptures, a barbecue area, signage, flying fox, skatepark and a swimming pool.
“Of course our funds will not reach this far – but it’s good to have dreams, so any future contributions are welcomed,” regional operations manager Julie Kirk said.
The Red Cross and Ms Thomas meanwhile continue of other activities at the Koori village, including a playgroup and bingo for the elders.
