A 36-year-old woman allegedly rang the doorbell of a Victoria Street home, and told the occupants she had to leave the baby and flee to another country.
Police said she then walked to Victoria Street Railway Station with her other child, aged 2.
The occupants of the home called police, who found the woman and child at the train station.
Family and Community Services were also contacted and attended to the welfare of the children. They were both safely put into the care of relatives.
The woman was taken to Maitland Hospital for a mental health assessment and later released. Police are dealing with the situation as a mental health issue.
