The concert band, conducted by David Quinlan opened the concert with Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man made popular by Emerson, Lake and Palmer in 1977. The concert band’s program included music from Phantom of the Opera, themes from Italian films, Bohemian Rhapsody and Disney blockbusters.
The jazz band, conducted by Paul Dion, opened with a tribute to Ronnie Scott, Scott’s Place. The program included a special arrangement by David Quinlan of For Your Eyes Only, the theme to one of the Bond films and an arrangement of All of Me by Mr Dion which featured solos by several of the jazz band members.
Oscar Gill’s Swing Lake, based on Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, put a different light on the well-known classical piece of music.
An arrangement of the Anvil Chorus by David Quinlan for the band allowed for some fun as special guest, councillor Sharon Tapscott was persuaded to assist by playing the “anvil” with a large hammer.
The audience was then treated to Prelude Op.3 No 2 by Rachmaninoff when 15-year-old Hunter Bailey-Watts played the piano.
In her welcome, Cr Tapscott said it was wonderful to see the wide age range of musicians collaborating in community band.
