In an expanded field this year, organisers are thrilled to have nearly capped the field almost two weeks in advance of play on November 17 at the Pambula-Merimbula Golf Club.
“We’re absolutely full, we’ve got 37 teams at this point,” spokesman for the NSW Police Force Cliff Scarlet says.
“It’s predicted to be 23 and sunny, the big fella is smiling down on us and it’s going to be perfect.”
“We’re over the moon – the reception we’ve had from businesses we’ve asked to donate and the players that want to participate for this worthy cause has been overwhelming.”
The charity day is all about a bit of fun and socialising to acknowledge the hard work of emergency service personnel – both active and retired.
However, organisers also like to back local projects and last year the day raised almost $7000 for the children’s ward of the South East Regional Hospital.
This year, organisers are hoping to make about double that as they get behind Nardy House in Quaama to assist with the purchase of a therapy pool.
“It’s going to be a therapeutic pool that will be available for use by the wider community,” Mr Scarlet said.
“We’re delighted to say we’re already past last year’s $7000, with some coin donation tins placed around.”
Mr Scarlet said a few teams had “stacked” their ranks with some well-known golfers, but also welcomed an increased presence from fireys.
“The Merimbula Fireys could be contenders this year, they’re a good social team, but they’ll be in the running,” he said.
Mr Scarlet encouraged anyone from the services to get in quick for the last spot, but said non-golfers and civilians could also help the cause at a separate event.
On November 16 there will be a charity function at the Merimbula Sundeck with tickets $50 per person.
Mr Scarlet said there would be “great food and great entertainment” with Andy O’Donnell and Garry Carson Jones performing on the night as well as Mark ‘Jacko’ Jackson “doing what he does best”.
“It’s an opportunity for those that don’t golf to join in and get in the spirit with Mark donating a considerable amount of the profits to our cause,” he said.
Tickets for the night function can be purchased at the Sundeck, while organisers said the golf on November 17 should be a fantastic day out.
Mark Jackson will appear as a guest speaker alongside presentations, auctions and raffles with organisers hoping to raise about $20,000 for Nardy House.
