The organisation has 140 planes in over 50 countries, and the “flying chaplain” visited Bega last week as guest speaker of the regular Men’s Breakfast group at St John’s Anglican Church.
Before retiring in 2014, Mr Watts worked for many years in Arnhem Land and Central Australia.
“At one stage in around 1978 I was badly lost in the middle of the wet season in Arnhem Land,” Mr Watts said.
“I had these guys in the plane who were locals, and I had to ask them where Roper River was. Amazingly they knew.”
The men’s knowledge of the area was so good, they told Mr Watts he was about 30 degrees off course.
He adjusted his plane, and the eventually landed at Roper River.
“We eventually arrived, I’m glad I had them on board. During the wet season the whole environment changes,” he said.
