Orchid show: Champion local orchid grower Michael Wood, of Kalaru, is part of next week's spring show at the Bega Civic Centre.

The official start to spring this year may well be 9am, Thursday, September 21, when a massed display of orchids opens at the Bega Valley Civic Centre. A stunning display of Australian native orchids will be the highlight of the two-day 2017 Spring Show by the Sapphire Coast Orchid Club.

“Dendrobriums don’t just look spectacular and have a wonderful scent, they’re also easy to grow and quite resilient,” club president Graham Gray said. Champion local grower, Michael Wood of Kalaru, specialises in the native orchids and will have some very good examples of the latest trends.

As well as the many and varied Dendrobiums, a great display of the ever popular Cymbidiums will also be included. The free show will run from 9am till 4pm, Thursday and Friday, September 21-22, but you will need to be early to take advantage of the sale table.

Fishing club news

The bi-annual inter-Club competition between the Bermagui Hotel Fishos and the Bermagui CC Social Anglers was a walk-away win for the Hotel Club. With a weigh-in of 83.6kg against 24.4kg, president Sandy Livingston had much pleasure in retaining the shield.  The get-together on Sunday, with a delightful lunch at the Hotel, was well patronised by both Clubs.

An added interest on the day was a “Happy Birthday” for Country Club member Ron McGlashan.   Linda Emerton, a Country Club member also was the lucky winner of the day’s raffle. Members of the Anglers’ Club will have their next in-house competition over a three-day weekend – October 13-15.

Foster carers wanted

This Foster Care Week, local agency MacKillop Family Services would like to thank its foster carers for the great work they do, and for their tireless efforts supporting children and young people in care.

“Foster carers play a vital role in the lives of children and young people, who through no fault of their own may have endured traumatic or difficult experiences,” said Louise Dever, manager MacKillop Family Services Far South Coast.  “By providing a stable home, foster carers can set a child or young person on a path for a brighter future. We are currently seeking more foster carers for children and young people of all ages in the Bega region.”

MacKillop provides foster carers with ongoing support, training and regular breaks. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a foster carer, MacKillop is holding a no-obligation Foster Care Information Session on September 20, from 7pm-8pm at its offices in 86 Auckland St, Bega. Phone 1300 791 677 for more details and to register your interest.
