Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on Thursday travelled the mountain region revealing plans for a $2billion expansion of the iconic scheme that could power up to 500,000 homes through a new network of tunnels and power stations.
The surprise intervention, touted as a potential game-changer in the political brawl over flaws in the nation's electricity system, will increase the scheme's 4100 megawatt capacity by as much as 50 per cent.
“This is a massive economic development,” Mr Constance said on Thursday.
“It’s not only shoring up energy needs for the whole nation, but it is fundamental for employment and jobs growth in the South East.”
