MR Bennett subsequently bought different properties, one of which he disposed of to immense advantage to the AJS Bank.
He afterwards settled in Wolumla, in the Bega district, and purchased the business of Mr Henry Fowler, JP.
This he now conducts. Mr Bennett’s premises contain over 20 rooms, and are valued at something like 2000 pounds, which it is his intention to shortly open a general store.
He was created JP in 1870, and when 28 years of age married a daughter of W Duncan, at one time connected with the Supreme Court.
JOSEPH GERRARD STEWART was born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, in the year 1857, and received his primary education in that place.
At an early age he was taken by his parents to Ireland, attended the National School in Queen’s County for about three years, and was then apprenticed to Mr Joseph Semple of Seapoint House, Monkstown, family grocer, tea and wine merchants, County Dublin, where he completed his time.
Mr Stewart proceeded to Kingstown, about four miles distant, and entered the service of Messrs Halliday Bros, family grocers, tea and wine merchants, as first counter hand, and remained in their employ till 1880, when he sailed for this colony, arriving in Sydney in January 1881.
Soon after landing he went to Candelo, where he was in a shop as assistant for nearly a year; but finding indoor work too irksome, he started a dairy farm. This was neither as romantic or profitable as he supposed, he came to Wolumla and started a general store.
FREDERICK SCHAFER is the proprietor of the Railway Junction Hotel, which is one of the finest hostelries in the district. It is a splendid building and stands in a healthy position.
The hotel is very convenient for travellers between Bega, Candelo and Eden. As all arrangements are under the personal supervision of Mr Schafer, tourists may rest assured of being well entertained.
