Fling Physical Theatre has been finishing rehearsals for its new show We Will Come to the Rescue ahead of a season of performances in Bega. 

In it, the young cast embraces the themes of the superhero genre, with heroes fighting a team of supervillains bent on global destruction.

It is the sequel to Fling’s popular 2006 show Who Will Come to the Rescue?  

“It’s a meeting point of old and new,” Fling’s co-artistic director Rob McCredie said. 

“I wanted it to be like a superhero movie, to have that excitement and the rush you get because you’re invested in the action.” 

One of the performers in the piece is Jazmyn Carter, a Year 12 student at Bega High School who was nominated for her original choreography in Callback, a showcase of Higher School Certificate dance performances. 

“I felt we had to put a lot of thought into what our character was,” she said. 

“We’ve had to embrace different personas and powers and create illusions of physical powers through our bodies.”

She said the show was a mixture of contemporary and physical theatre and demonstrated skills in gymnastics and acrobatics. 

The company has had plenty of practise perfecting the show, as last month the performers toured in regional NSW visiting Yass and Bathurst before blowing their audiences away at Artlands Regional Arts Conference in Dubbo. 

“I think it was really good for the company to go on tour as it really helped us grow together as a unit,” Ms Carter said. 

Much like superhero teams such as Marvel’s The Avengers, the performers have to work closely together and rely on each other for their show to be successful. 

“We’ve got to know all movements of our partners, partly to understand what you are doing yourself,” Ms Carter said. 

We Will Come to the Rescue will be performed at the Bega Valley Commemorative Civic Centre, Bega.

A preview session will be on November 30 from 7pm, then the season runs December 1-3 at 7pm and on December 4 at 4pm.
