Boats that have got to give it a go have found the seals thick and persistent when it comes to snatching fish. Nature might be getting its own with reports of a large great white shark cruising the island last week.

The sand flathead fishing has been good of Narooma and Bermagui, with some snapper reported in the Goalen Head area south of Bermi last week. There are still some marlin out there for the game fishermen although bait levels had fallen off but are now picking up again. 

In the local lakes, Wagonga is recovering after the recent flathead comp with some salmon thrown in, while there have been good bream on the Wallaga flats.

Ray at Brewing, Camping, Fishing in Moruya reports with the dark of the moon this week, the prawns are running again. It's also a good time for flathead who come on the chew around the dark, with some fine specimens landed last weekend. The beaches around Moruya are still producing well, tailor and salmon with whiting and bream for good measure.

The crew of Club Narooma Bowlo Fishing club held their monthly comp over the weekend with the weather playing its part.

So quite a few hit the ocean in both charter boats as well as their own and all brought home a big selection of fish with some huge mowies included in their bags plus snapper, pigfish, flatties and trevally but no kings. Little Will Tiffen grew a few inches with his nice gummy shark.

The beaches were hit and miss this month but there were some thumper salmon caught and it’s great fun on light line with a few bream and a couple of whiting in the mix .

Winners for the month saw Randall Setzer just win overall by 5 points from Mick Kavic with Brenda Setzer, Will Tiffen, Adam Giffen, Peter Shakeshaft, Wayne Giffen, Mandy Yates, Jack Bennet, Dave Clark, Beck Smart and Garry Landells all pick up a prize for the month and the all kids that attended loved the lucky dip of fishing gear that was donated by Narooma Charters’ Norm and Nick Ingersole.

So the next big hit out is in a few weeks where it’s freshwater comp time at Buckenderra, so let’s hope the trout are in a play mood and everyone has a safe trip.

The next comp is April 1-3 and the fishing club members send our condolences to Jill Huckstead who lost her husband Ian a week ago while on holidays. Members showed a minutes silence in respect of his passing and our thought are with you in this tough time. So on a sombre note all the best to the NSGFC this weekend for its big comp and now time to get the trout gear out! – Fishfingers

​Wazza and Colin Stubbs recently visited New Zealand's North Island for a fishing trip where Colin is pictured with one of his huge kingfish. A reminder to all our members that tickets are now on sale at Club Dalmeny for our Annual Trivia Night. It’s $15 for members $25 non-members. Lot’s of prizes on offer and it’s a theme night with a two-course menu for tables of six. Single or group bookings available and The Nashberries will be playing at Club Dalmeny from 8pm till close, so there will be lots of dancing after trivia. Seats will be limited for trivia so book your table early! The Dalmeny Fishing Club’s next weigh in will be Sunday, March 20 and six girls are heading out with Wazza on his charter, so expect some good catches. –  Kim

A reminder that Bermagui Country Club Social Anglers’ Club holds its March fishing competition this weekend with the weigh-in 12.30pm Sunday. New members are always welcome, and gather for mid-day barbecue on Sunday. – Drifting 

Narooma Sport and Game Fishing Club is pleased to host this weekend’s 46th annual Australian National Sportfishing Association’s Narooma Convention, commencing Friday, March 11 with final weigh, Sunday, March 13 at 1 pm.

Attracting more than 100 anglers and their families every March, this is by far the biggest competition the club holds. It caters from Thursday evening through to Sunday lunch, feeding the competitors. The clubhouse is full in the evenings with its licensed bar open, nightly raffles and fun giveaways entertaining the crowd.

Fishing can be from the rocks, beach, in the estuaries or outside in the blue water. Tagging, catch and release and weighing of captures are all options. Great prizes for 23 categories are presented Sunday afternoon around 2pm.

The convention is steeped in history, in its heyday attracting more than 2000 competitors and boosting Narooma’s economy enormously, bringing hundreds of people back to Narooma for annual holidays or becoming permanent residents. Although not in those numbers anymore, the club still likes to think the convention contributes towards Narooma’s reputation as a holiday mecca. Local businesses are tremendous in their support, making the prize pool and raffles exceptional. The club is grateful and does everything possible to give them exposure and redirect customers.
