Ms Fuge said local residents helped raise more than $2200, almost double on last year’s effort.

Ms Fuge, who has manned a Daffodil Day merchandise stall over the past four years, was supported by sisters Teini and Debbie, and good friend Nicole Fuller.

This year, the Bega volunteers decided to add some new items to the merchandise mix.

The popular classics such as pins, pens, badges, flowers and teddy bears were once again on offer, while a range of coloured hair sprays were introduced on Friday.

“The hair colouring wasn’t as popular as hoped, but next year we are going to try again and hopefully it will do better,” Ms Fuge said.

However, Ms Fuge said there were a couple of success stories.

“The new gardener bears were one of the hottest items, while we sold out of fresh flowers in the first two-and-a-half hours,” she said.

Apart from selling items, a highlight for Ms Fuge was meeting people who have been affected by cancer.

“People came up and said they won their battle with cancer, or had a family member or best friend that had cancer,” she said.

“We also heard sad stories where they have lost a child, a partner, a mother, father, brother, sister or a best friend.

“They support Daffodil Day to help raise funds to find a cure for cancer, so other people don’t have to go through what they have been through.

“It brings tears to your eyes and sends chills down your back – it makes what we do feel more realistic.”

Ms Fuge thanked the local community for their support and said she was now looking to set up a stall in October for Pink Ribbon Day.

Daffodil Day is the Cancer Council’s annual event that raises funds for cancer research, prevention and support services.

It is the largest national fundraising event of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

Organisers hoped to raise $9.2million in 2012 and according to the Daffodil Day website, they had already passed the $5.2million mark.
