The Liberal MP confirmed his pre-selection for the seat of Bega, which runs from Durras Lake in the north to the Victorian border – and now incorporates Bemboka after the electoral boundary change last year (24/9/13).
Mr Constance has been the Liberal Member for Bega for 11 years – “a very quick 11 years” he said with a grin.
“This is an incredibly wonderful community, a generous community, and I’m very proud to be its representative.
“By re-contesting, I’m again seeking the community’s support to continue that representation until 2019.”
At this stage, Mr Constance said he was unsure about who he would be running against in the election race, but did say the previous three elections “were really positive experiences for all concerned and I would like to think the next election is a positive experience”.
Mr Constance pointed to NSW being the first to “bed down” the National Disability Insurance Scheme as the achievement of which he is most proud.
“The last three years I think people would acknowledge I’ve been very active as Minister.
“It has been a terrific three years when we have been driving new development…helping with everything from the local Girl Guides to supporting the council’s work with the Eden Port.”
While Mr Constance has enjoyed the support of the Bega electorate for over a decade, the Liberal Party at a state level has had its share of concerns lately.
Mr Constance acknowledged that, but said state Labor’s record on corruption wasn’t spotless either.
“I think for the community, a lot just want to make sure their kids are well taught in school, and if they turn up to an emergency department they get seen to.
“What matters most is we have the safety nets in place to catch anyone engaged in that type of behaviour out.
“What we can do is get on with the job of governing
“We’re focused on making sure to get the budget repaired and make sure we are investing in Bega, which is what people want.”
