The division three team travelled to Tathra on Sunday for the third pennant round and were welcomed to a rather quick green with swirling winds that made bowling very difficult for all concerned.
Tathra’s division one team got on the board early and raced out to lead 34-21 by the half way mark and it looked like it was going to be a white wash.
However, as Bega has done so regularly in the past, they pulled up their socks and levelled the match by the 18th end at 54-54 and looked set to make it two wins in a row over Tathra.
Over the remaining ends, the Tathra team again steadied and recorded a 61-59 win.
There was a lot of “friendly rivalry” on the greens when Bega’s division six played Bega’s division seven in their pennant round.
The sevens were not about to be humbled by the sixes and scored freely in the early stages, holding a 44-37 shot lead on the 39th end increasing to an eight-shot lead on the 48th.
However, it came down to “Poppa” Jauncey and “Gaitor’s” rinks picking up 14 shots between them to guide the sixes home, with all rinks totalling 69-56
In singles championship games, Phil Gorman scored well early to establish a nine-shot lead on end 12, only to allow Warren Peel to match him at 25-25 each on end 27.
Six ends later Gorman emerged victorious 31-30.
Frank Dorris led Bryson Beetson 23-13 by end 22 and looked home and hosed.
However, Beetson had news for him, coming home with a strong finish to win 31-29.
One game in the club pairs between the George brothers against Andrew Warby and Jason Hetherton had the brothers scoring more shots to win 21-19.
Social bowls on Wednesday had 16 members competing in two games of triples and one game of pairs.
Winners for the afternoon were “Gaitor”, Helen Elliott and Paul Ubrihien winning three sets to love against Ross Elliott, Leigh Crowe and Phil Benny.
Runners-up were Adam Taylor and Brian Moore winning two sets to one against Robert Stahmer and Ray Hunt.
In the other game, “Bomber” Moody, Fox and Milton Milenkovic defeated Peter Turner, Geoff Apps and Allan Hull two sets to love.
Members said Saturday’s social was pretty quiet, with a lot of players resting up for Sunday pennant after having competed at the Tathra Pairs Invitaion event during the week.
Winners for the afternoon were Ken Snowdon, John Holzhauser and Paul Robilliard defeating Graham Wheeler, Bryson Beetson and Bob Deighton 27-17.
Holzhauser and Frank Dorris went down to Moody and Darce 23-16.
The minor pairs entry form is on the board and nominations close on the first of March.
Due to difficulties the club has another phone number to ring on Wednesday’s and Saturdays for social bowls.
