Damage to the wall occurred during site preparations when a shipping container was being moved into place.
Project manager Andrew Stewart said the war memorial plaques were scheduled for relocation under the civic centre redevelopment, so work to safely remove the plaques has been brought forward and completed.
“Council has been in discussion with the local RSL branch regarding the war memorial relocation and the plaques have now been carefully and successfully removed by qualified personnel,” Mr Stewart said.
“The plaques have been put into safe storage for later reinstallation.
“We will continue discussions with the RSL regarding an appropriate location for the new memorial adjacent to the new civic centre, and the community will be notified once a new location has been determined,” he said.
Also scheduled for relocation is the flagpole directly behind the war memorial wall.
The Australian and Aboriginal flags will continue to fly on the new Littleton Gardens flagpoles.
