CR JANETTE Neilsen, deputy mayor of the Bega Valley Shire, offered a warm welcome to participants in the 21st Australian Esperanto Summer School, during the school's opening ceremony at Kianniny Cabins Resort on Monday morning, January 16.
Noting that this was the first of the annual Australian Esperanto summer schools to be held far from a city, Cr Neilsen suggested that the Esperanto Association had chosen the best spot in Australia.
Although previously she had heard only vaguely about Esperanto, Cr Neilsen was intrigued to learn recently that it is an active international language, useful in almost any country.
More than 50 Australian Esperantists, plus visitors from China, Argentina, Japan, France and Germany will spend two weeks at the school improving their knowledge of Esperanto; using Esperanto to learn about the local flora and fauna; and renewing national and international friendships.
During 2005, students in the year 5/6 class at Candelo Public School have been learning Esperanto as their LOTE."
