Group 16 Rugby League chairman Allan Wilton is calling for more stringent protection around key football grounds after a number of obscene slurs were spray-painted on the Bega grandstand. There was also evidence of items being burned and broken glass at the ground on Wednesday morning, March 7.
“There are gates unlocked or completely open, but It really should be a secure area,” Mr Wilton says.
He said the grandstands were built by volunteers and the graffiti was disrespectful to every person who would now have to help clean up before Bega plays host to representative fixtures next weekend.
“Group 16 is hosting players from across Group 8 and Canberra next weekend. What kind of message does it send to them if they see our grounds in that sort of state?
“It’s terribly disappointing and we would like to see more security around these grounds.”
It’s not the first time the ground’s security has been questioned, with the former canteen building destroyed by fire in early 2014.
