As well as meals, Ricky’s provides a community for a variety of different people and a space for social connection.
This community has developed over more than eight years and some of the volunteers, as well as clients, have been part of Ricky’s for all that time.
When asked why they come to Ricky’s, one of the clients said “It’s about social interaction as well as the food.”
For the volunteers the reasons are more varied.
Most said they came because they wanted to serve the community and make a difference.
They have met and become friends with other volunteers, they have learned a lot about cooking and have connected with lots of new people, including clients.
You don’t need to be a great cook to work at Ricky’s, there are plenty of vegetables to prepare, dishes to wash and tables to set.
Volunteers also collect fresh food from the supermarkets. At Ricky’s Place we are very thankful to Coles and Woolworths, who generously donate meat, bread, fruit and vegetables each week.
If you would like to volunteer at Ricky’s, or would like to find out more, please contact the coordinator, Sharon Zweck at St John’s office, 6492 5555.
