The program called Uplift is part of South East Arts’ Swell: Arts & Health program and is supported by the Mumbulla Foundation.
Mayor Kristy McBain said “art and music are the cornerstones to human existence”. She congratulated the initiative and is pleased to see that music will be part of the hospital space.
General manager of South East Arts Andrew Gray said there will be plenty of opportunities for Uplift to expand.
“We are a regional organisation, we have health facilities from the bay to the border and up to the high country so there is plenty of opportunity to expand projects like this as well as to develop other projects that bring arts and health together,” he said.
The year-long lunchtime series has a line up of six performances booked in. Art and health project officer Gabrielle Powell said that the few music sessions they have run so far has had “amazing feedback”.
“People that were disengaged and on medication actually participated more, they then needed less medication and weren’t as aggressive that week, working much better with the staff.”
