Looking for leadership
Five years ago I moved down to the Bega Valley region to research and honour my convict and settler ancestors.

In all my 60 years of moving, I was conscious for the first time of moving on to Aboriginal land and thus sought to acknowledge this fact.
Since that time I have become very conscious of the increasing pride and sense of dignity within the local Indigenous community and give honour to the local Indigenous leadership.
It was less than 60 years ago that the local Bega Valley Shire Council voted against allowing members of the Indigenous community to live within the Bega township, perhaps one of the last councils to do so.
Times have changed and we have progressed. As a community and council you have led in response to the challenges of climate change and environmental protection.
Again it is time for the council to provide leadership and stand alongside our Indigenous brothers and sisters by continuing the healing within our community.
It is time to hear and acknowledge the call to recognise our national day on a date when all Australians can celebrate.

Top achievers take note
To all Bega Valley residents, last year I instituted a prize for the top three students of the Bega Valley who achieved ATAR above 95 – first prize $350, second prize $250 and third prize $150.
I understand there are three students this year but it is becoming a herculean task trying to get contact details.
If you know someone who has achieved this please get them to contact my secretary on 6492 6013 before January 23 otherwise the prize will lapse.
My secretary Kathy has been on the phone for hours trying to trace students without much success and I cannot really ask her to spend more time on this at the expense of patients.

Professionalism
Professionalism, dedication, expertise, skill, common sense and empathy – qualities shared by the team at the Bega Vet Clinic.
I saw this first-hand at 10.30pm on Christmas night, when my great dane was rushed into their operating theatre with no fewer than three vets on hand, to try and save the life of my “boy” who was struck down with bloat.
Intensive care followed the three-plus hours of surgery which proved to be a remarkable success.
The Bega Valley is very fortunate to have access to first-class pet and animal care in general.
It's difficult to give enough thanks and praise to these good people, and their associated team in Cobargo.

Pambula Show sponsors
I would like to reassure the sponsors that their funds are not lost.
The Pambula Show Committee would like to say to locals and visitors that we could not be more disappointed at having to call off the show on Saturday morning.
The committee and many volunteers had put hours into preparing a great family show but strong rain on Saturday morning and a forecast of more meant that most outside activities, other than the horse events, could not go ahead.
Nevertheless, many people came out to the free displays and events in the afternoon.
We would like to especially thank the many sponsors of the show. We could not run a show without your support.
We will, if you are happy, commit the funds you provided for this year’s show to a bigger and better show in 2019.
Russell Fitzpatrick, president, Pambula Show Committee
