This year proved no exception with eight squads attending, visitors coming from Canberra, Cooma, Victoria and all points local.
Perfect conditions for shooting greeted one and all with bright sunshine with officials saying a cooling nor-easterly helping ease the blazing heat.
The Tarraganda sees shooters face a collection of 25 double barrel, 25 single, 25 point score and finally, 25 Continental making it a true test of competitors’ skills.
Officials joked that no one told the overall winner, who dropped one target and pulled a second in the point score.
Chris Davis regularly makes the trip up from Orbost in Victoria to support club events. On Sunday, after the first two rounds of double barrel and single barrel, he had not dropped a target. A slight lapse in the point score and then another 25 in the continental made sure his trip up was not in vain; Davis took the sash and first prize with a score of 146/150, two points clear of another three skilful shooters in Charlie Smith, Tony Gray and Chris Rowland, who all finished 144/150. After another forty targets Chris Rowland,182/190, took out AA grade with Charlie settling for second, 181/190.
A grader,Tony Gray, who organisers joked was “of a senior vintage like many of us” took pleasure in collecting the Veteran’s sash and prize with a score of 144/150, leaving the rest of the young blokes in A grade to fight for the trophy.
Bairnsdale visitor, Frank Bagnato did the honours in A grade with a score of 139/150. Shane Platts showed faith in his new Browning to take second with a score of 132/150. 133/150 was just enough to get John Walker the B grade prize, one point ahead of Sharon McDonald on 132/150. The highlight of B grade was the enjoyment we all got watching 14year old Blake Gruber finish just two points back,131/150. Blake has been shooting for just over twelve months and displayed skill and sportsmanship throughout the day. The future of our sport is in good hands.Blake enjoyed the rewards for his efforts taking the Junior prize for the day.
C Grade saw the consistent George Toyne continue his charge towards B grade. George shot 132/150 to take first, with Christel Feldmann in second place on 113/150. Ladies award for the day went to Natalie Hitchenson with a core of 125/150.
The shoot raffle was won by Frank Bagnato. Frank was doubly generous, missing a target to help the treasurer and then donating his meat tray to Blake Gruber as a means of encouraging this keen young shooter. A most impressive gesture.
Next month the Club shoots on Feb 4th, with two events on offer: 50T Ball Trap and 50T Continental. Practice from 9.30 with competition from 10am.
