Every week of the year, Rob and Deb Parsons of the Bega Salvation Army pack hampers of rescued food for families in need, but their Christmas ones are slightly different.

“There is breakfast lunch and dinner provided, as always,” Ms Parsons said.
“But there are also cakes, treats, a Christmas pudding, those little things that make it a special day.”
The children of families that receive Christmas hampers from the Salvos also receive toys as gifts.
The Salvo’s source these gifts from giving tress throughout the region, including the one in the foyer of the Bega District News office.
Last year, the Bega Salvo’s distributed about 50 hampers to people experiencing hard times. They expect a similar amount this year.
“The lead up to Christmas is a pretty expensive time of year because of traveling to visit family and buying presents,” Mr Parsons said.
“It’s also when the cost of running a bar heater all winter catches up with you, so bills can really put people behind around this time.”
The Salvos identify those who need a helping hand during Christmas through a nomination system. Welfare organisations they collaborate with fill out a nomination for people or families to secure them a Christmas hamper.
The nomination form allows the Salvos to understand what size hamper they need, how it will be delivered and the ages and gender of the children so they can receive appropriate presents.
Each hamper has the Bega Salvos logo on it.
“There are a lot of people we look after that really struggle to get out,” Ms Parsons said.
“If they receive a hamper, and it has our sticker on it, at least they know there is someone who cares here.”
Aside from hampers, the Salvo’s are also organising a carol service and lunch on Sunday, December 14 from 10:30am and a barbecue and carols on Christmas Eve from 5:30pm at their church of Auckland St.
“There’s plenty to keep us busy over the next month,” Mr Parsons said.
