Warmer currents are pushing southwards and it is anticipated that marlin will soon be moving into our game areas. There are already lots of small slimy mackerel, just follow the birds.  

Closer in, good size Australian salmon are hugging Haycock Point and Long Point, so it’s worth a slow troll to find the action.  Off the beaches Aslings, Haycock and Tura seem the best localities.

Kingfish have been sighted at the Merimbula Wharf where some stonker squid remain order of the day.  Australian salmon are also active, mornings and evenings are the best time to hook up, metal spinners and hard body plastics both work well. 

Snapper and morwong can be targeted along our local reefs and respond to bait and soft plastics.  Good size snapper are reported at about 20 fathoms off North Head and Green Cape.

Flathead are biting well about the Boyds Tower Reef and some good size tiger and sand flathead are reported.  Flathead are starting to bite well at all the local spots: Haycock, Tura Beach, White Rock, Kianinny and Nelsons. 

Now is the time to get your prawning gear ready for the run at the next new moon.  Some have run already and this means that prawn-like Squid Jigs are the go and both flathead and reef areas are firing up.  In the estuaries tailor remain active early morning and evening.  Try trolling in the Pambula Broadwater and across the deeper holes in the cross channel using silver lures. 

A beautiful 15kg jewfish was reported from Pambula as well as the large fish hugging the deep holes at Mogareeka.  All the estuaries are returning bream and trevally, keep a watch for garfish and big mullet.  Dusky flathead are responding to soft plastics as well as hard body lures. 

The club will be holding its annual Tackle World Tri-Estuary Challenge over the weekend of December 2-3.  This fishing competition is catch and release only with fish length photographed on a “brag mat” for prizes.  This event is open to all anglers. 

With a new format and a prize pool of some $7700 for more than 50 prizes, the club anticipates more than 100 competitiors.  The fishing areas are the Bega River, Merimbula and Merimbula Back lakes and Pambula Lake.  Entry finalised at the briefing on December 1 at the Clubhouse in Spencer Park.  Entry forms from the club, McKays Oysters and Tackle World Merimbula and Fyshwick.
