Renewable concern
Can we keep one genie in its bottle? Climate change and energy needs are confronting problems. In my meeting with Dr [Mike] Kelly MP last week he was pleased to report that renewable energy was number one concern in his recent Eden-Monaro electorate survey. He acknowledged the primary importance of renewable energy industries to promote community development and growth, as an essential alternative to destructive extraction.

The Carmichael Basin Mine is a genie that must be kept in its bottle. As the largest coal mining proposal in Australia, it’s fruition would spell disaster for climate change emission targets. But how can a Federal Member of Parliament in Opposition assist to keep Queensland’s Adani genie contained? Keep raising public opposition was his advice (eg. social media). If that’s all we’ve got, we have to use it.
So, Bega Valley community does not have coal or gas reserves. We have sun, water and wind. How fortunate for our immediate beautiful surrounds. However, we are not the whole world. The whole world needs protection from carbon emissions. If Bega Valley cares about this maybe a message to our rural fellows in Queensland during its current election will sustain its courage in opposing the Adani mine development. There are more constructive ways to create jobs than destroy the planet.
Please Bega, encourage Queensland to end coal and stop Adani from opening the Carmichael Basin Mine in Queensland. Bega Valley is among many communities who care. Write to MP’s call your northern friends, divest in all coal related financing, sign petitions. Keep the message loud and clear.

A successful Raise the Roof Spring Fair was held by Friends of the Old Bega Hospital on October 29, but it wouldn’t have been such a great day without the community behind it.
Principal support came from our major sponsors, the Bega Valley Shire Council and Bega Cheese, and R D Miller also gave a generous donation.
