The Lumen Christi Catholic College year nine student was one of 13 students who became caught in a rip in the river mouth and dragged out to the surf.
Rough conditions saw many kayaks become overturned, forcing students into the water. All students and staff have been accounted for and returned to the school in a mini-bus.
Pambula Surf Life Saving Club duty officer Andrew Holt was alerted to the incident at 2.43pm and arrived to a scene of chaos.
“It didn’t look good. There were boats tipped upside down and students in the water,” Mr Holt said.
He said students and teachers managed to bring themselves back into calmer waters and onto shore. Students were wearing lifejackets.
Pambula SLSC members were trying to collect the remaining stray kayaks from the surf about 3.30pm.
Paramedics and police attended the scene, with police now preparing a report.
