The lab was officially opened in March last year as part of the $187 million hospital development.
The team of ten scientists, technical assistants and collectors keep the lab running 24/7 to service local clinicians and patients on the Far South Coast, ranging from northern Victoria to Moruya in the north and as far as the Monaro District in the West.
Supervising scientist of NSW Health pathology at Bega Melinda Irving said serving such a large area allowed her pathology unit to develop a better and more broad skill set.
Although pathology work often happens out of sight, it plays a vital role in the healthcare system. 70 per cent of medical decisions rely on pathology to diagnose and treat patients, and 100 per cent of cancer is diagnosed by pathology.
The pathology unit also stores the region’s life-saving blood supply for cancer and or trauma patients to provide life-saving transfusions.
