The galah came to the attention of park management, who contacted Wildlife Rescue South Coast.
Essential Energy attended the scene with a cherry picker to reach the bird which was trapped about 10 meters high. It was then handed to Wildlife Rescue volunteer Goldie Fulton.
Ms Fulton said the galah’s foot had become entangled in the netting used to package onion and avocados at grocery stores, which had then caught on the tree’s branches. Aside from some skin missing from his leg, the galah was unharmed.
Mesh netting, fishing lines and rubber bands pose a huge risk to birds.
“Just a little bit of rubbish to us is deadly to them,” Ms Fulton said.
She said Wildlife Rescue needs volunteers, especially in summer with increased human activity in the region.
