Fagan, who plays Spanish, Flamenco and Classical guitar, will perform at the Funhouse Studio on Sunday, November 26.
Fagan has followed in the footsteps of his ancestors as a touring artist, and has toured with an extraordinary array of the world's greats, including Natalie Cole, the Original Buena Vista Social Club, Shirley Bassey, Michael Crawford, and Billy Connolly.
His show, which crosses more than 500 years of Spanish guitar music from the 16th to the 21st century, takes the listener on a journey of music through the ancient Guitar Vihuela, Baroque, Romantic and modern Spanish periods.
The show is inspired by Julian Bream’s recording “Guitarra” & “Flamenco Guitar”, and includes performances of Solearas, Peteneras, Alegrias, Bulerias and Sevillanas.
The concert also features highlights from Matthew’s CD, ‘Virtuoso - A Homage to My Ancestors’, a record that celebrates the Parkes family, his internationally renowned ancestors.
The record includes arrangements of classical masterpieces such as Spring & Winter from Vivaldi's Four Seasons, Mozart’s Rondo Alla Turca, Paganini’s Caprice No. 24, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumblebee, and O’Carolan's Celtic Harp.
Albert Parkes (Fagan’s great grandfather) was a fine violinist, musician and teacher from Covent Garden, and his three sons Cecil (violin and piano), Kingsley (violin and piano), and Milton (piano) had a profound effect on the Australian musical scene in the early 20th century.
Cecil Parkes was a child prodigy who toured with famous Australian soprano Dame Nellie Melba.
He performed in patriot concerts around Australia, and toured the United States and Canada with assistance from Dame Melba in 1916 at the age of 13.
Other than Melba herself, no other Australian artist had made such an impact on an international stage in that period.
Cecil and well known pianist May Broderick (Cecil’s wife) performed in the Strad Trio with cellist Christine Frallion, and featured on Australia’s first Music Sound Film with music by Frank Thring Sr.
This will be a truly special evening of classical music performed by one of the best guitarists in the country.
