Fifty years later, the couple are still at each other’s side and celebrating their golden anniversary in the company of friends and family.
Helen and Jim first set eyes on each other at a Candelo Bemboka rugby league match, and within only a couple of days the couple were dating.
Helen’s mother, Islet Pauline, is now 91 years of age, but still remembers her daughter coming home from the football with the news she had met a handsome boy with the nicest, darkest eyes.
As if a sign, Islet also remembers it as beautiful day, sunny, calm and no wind.
There was no hesitation from Helen’s father, Eric, when Jim asked for her hand in marriage.
The newlyweds built their first house in Prospect Street, Bega, where they raised children, Brendan, Nicole and Stuart.
Described as loving, generous and kind parents, Helen and Jim now live happily ever after in Tathra.
