Australian singer, songwriter and harmonica player Dorothy-Jane Gosper first brought her band to the jazz club in March 2011, again in 2012 and 2014, and wowed her audience on each occasion.
Gosper on vocals/blues harp is backed by Dave Blanken on guitar/vocals, Paul Leeder on bass and Gavin Kelly on drums.
A gutsy performer, Gosper writes and performs with great determination and passion. She connects with her audience and delivers a powerhouse performance full of energy and natural open-hearted emotion. She wrote her first song at age seven and hasn’t stopped.
Gosper fell in love with the harmonica over 20 years ago and has been performing ever since. She became a full-time musician after winning her battle with breast cancer in 2007 and has released a new album every year since.
She is vocally influenced by Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone and Dinah Washington among others and has received awards from the Canberra Blues Society in recognition of her harmonica, vocals and songwriting talents.
She also performed for DSJC with Ali Penney (Divine Devilles) in 2015 and Pearlnoire (Come to Mama Blues Show) in May 2016 with outstanding shows on each occasion.
Born and bred in Canberra, Blanken is one of Australia’s outstanding blues guitarists. His distinctive style has become a driving force behind iconic Canberra bands Blind Freddy and The Groove Kings. He has also played with El Caminos, Ali Penney, Doc Span, Fiona Boyes and many other notable names on the blues circuit.
Leeder first took up the electric bass in 1966, his first being a homemade instrument which he subsequently traded-in on some “real” gear. In the late 1960s Leeder began gigging around Melbourne, mostly concentrating on Latin-rock and gypsy.
In 1978 he moved from Melbourne to Candelo playing with many local musicians before returning to Melbourne, soon after which he semi-retired from playing to concentrate on a career in the computer industry. In 1990 Leeder returned to the Far South Coast, and in 1996 he began working with the finest of the local music fraternity, including Bob Porter, Ken Vatcher and Pol O’Shea.
This will be drummer Kelly’s first visit to the Down South Jazz Club and members look forward to meeting and listening to him.
