On Thursday, October 19, Australian singer, song writer and harmonica player Dorothy-Jane will be joined by Dave Blanken (guitar/vocals), Paul Leeder (bass) and Gavin Kelly (drums).
Dorothy-Jane is described as a gutsy performer who performs, lives, writes and breathes with great determination and a passion that knows no tomorrow.
She connects with her audience and delivers a powerhouse performance full of energy and natural open-hearted emotion.
At age seven, Dorothy-Jane wrote her first song and hasn’t stopped since. She fell hopelessly in love with the harmonica over 20 years ago and became a full-time musician after winning her battle with breast cancer in 2007.
She is vocally influenced by Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone and Dinah Washington. Her harmonica, vocals and song-writing talents have been recognised with awards from the Canberra Blues Society.
Dave Blanken was born and bred in Canberra and is considered one of Australia’s outstanding Blues guitarists. His distinctive style has become a driving force behind iconic Canberra Blues bands Blind Freddy and The Groove Kings.
Dave has also played with El Caminos, Ali Penney, Doc Span, Fiona Boyes and many other notable names on the Blues circuit.
Paul Leeder first took up the electric bass in 1966, his first being a homemade instrument which he subsequently traded-in on some “real” gear. In the late 1960’s Paul began gigging around Melbourne, mostly concentrating on Latin-rock and gypsy.
In 1978 he moved from Melbourne to Candelo, playing with many local musicians before returning to Melbourne, soon after which he semi-retired from playing to concentrate on a career in the computer industry.
In 1990, Paul returned to the Far South Coast of NSW, and in 1996 he began working with the finest of the local music fraternity, too numerous to list but included among them are musicians Bob Porter, Ken Vatcher and Pol O’Shea. In 2006 Paulo moved to Canberra.
Dorothy-Jane has a new drummer with her band on this occasion, Gavin Kelly. It will be his first visit to the Down South Jazz Club.
A great night of jazz is assured. Cost is $15 for jazz club members and $20 for visitors. Table bookings can be made by ringing Aileen or Kevin on 64959853, by email at bookings@downsouthjazzclub.com, or will be available at the door.
The Club Sapphire bistro opens at 6.00pm and music will commence at 7.30pm. Meals can either be eaten in the Bistro, or ordered and eaten at leisure while listening to the music.
