Spring growth at new heights

Spring is known as a time of flower buds and plant growth, but this is going to the extreme.

Nigel Wiggins, of Bega, says an odd plant in his front yard has shot up more than three metres in only the past 16 days.

“I don’t water it, I don’t do anything with it – but it’s a monster now. Bega must be built on very good soil,” Mr Wiggins said.

When he first moved in four years ago, the plant was shifted from a pot on the balcony left by the previous occupant and put in the front garden.

“We just stuck it in the ground thinking it’ll live or it’ll die, doesn’t matter – but it hasn’t missed a beat since,” Mr Wiggins said.

The large stalk has what appear to be fruits or blossoms ready to bloom but Mr Wiggins is none the wiser as to what type of plant he has dominating his front yard, now taller than the nearby power lines.

“When it first started I just thought ‘what’s going on here’ and figured it would flower – but it hasn’t stopped.”

Anyone know what it is?
