Class 4 from Mumbulla School for Rudolf Steiner Education and Classes 4 and 5 from St Patrick’s Primary School kept busy by planting 400 seedlings adjacent to the old racecourse.

BRAWL community coordinator Erin Moon said many of the previous plantings along the pathway on the south eastern side of the racecourse had died, so the pupils were working to replace dead seedlings and thicken up the existing plantings.

Aside from enhancing the visual and amenity appeal of the pathway, the new plants will create a wall that will prevent weeds from encroaching on the pathway.

During the planting process, the pupils learned about the importance of the revegetation, reducing weeds and enhancing biodiversity.

Ms Moon said the day was about instilling a sense of stewardship of the plants in the children, to ensure the success of the site into the future. 

Ms Moon also thanked the On-Track Racecourse committee for donating 150 of the seedlings planted by the pupils on the day.
