It has been 100 years since the formation of Lions Clubs International, but Bemboka is no slouch, marking its own 50th anniversary this year.
The day was a way for Bemboka Lions members to both mark the double milestone anniversary as well as “give back” to their community.
At Colombo Park were vintage cars, historic engines and tractors, an archery range and tai chi demonstrations.
There were also information stalls from various community groups including the village’s garden club and Light Horse brigade, and food aplenty – unsurprisingly with Lions volunteers on the barbecue.
While the history of the organisation was on display, so was its future, with plans for a significant redevelopment of Colombo Park facilities shared with the day’s visitors.
Bemboka Lions public officer James Murray said, as trustees of the ground, the group was moving towards a facility management plan, which includes ways to develop the park so more people can make use of it.
Along with a newly formed Bemboka Sport and Recreation Club, the Lions are looking at constructing a shared community meeting room as well as a Men’s Shed at Colombo Park. Fundraising is underway with Mr Murray saying construction was hoped to be underway in January.
Mr Murray said the local Lions club has around 22 members and volunteers and looking healthy.
“Today is about giving back to our community and bringing people together,” he said.
