Nanette Moreton said she was surprised to discover the mine shaft on bush land south of Moruya while searching for her missing dogs at the weekend.
The Bega resident said there was no signage or safety fence near the 25-metre-deep mine, which she said was close to an area popular with dog walkers and cyclists.
Ms Moreton planned to place warning signs at the site.
“I’m going to keep pushing for community safety. I’m going to put a hand-written sign up there to warn people of the danger,” she said.
“It’s too much of a risk, human safety is a priority.”
While Ms Moreton’s story had a happy ending, she was astounded there had not been prior accidents.
Ms Moreton said she had phoned Eurobodalla Shire Council to determine if the mine was on public or private land. “If it’s private property, we’ll need permission from land owners to search more mines in the area,” she said.
