Two dogs have been winched to safety in a dramatic rescue after falling down a mine shaft in bushland south of Moruya on Sunday.
Moruya SES and Moruya Fire and Rescue were called to the mine shaft on a nature reserve near Spring Creek Road after 11am, following reports of two dogs tumbling 25 metres below the ground.
Unit Controller Jeff McMahon said it took about one hour to winch both dogs to safety, with crew member Chris Zammit hauling them to the surface one at a time.
Mr McMahon said the dogs were doing well with no visible injuries.
“Both dogs have been extricated from the mine shaft safe and well,” he said.
“They were very happy and well behaved.”
While a distressing incident, Mr McMahon said the owner, who is from the Bega region, was optimistic throughout the rescue effort.
