The group has built up over 680 likes on Facebook, and hit a major milestone in June this year when it secured $3million to put toward the bike path’s construction.
Now the community is getting a chance to trial the proposed cycle corridor, with a bike ride fundraiser event later this month.
Proceeds from the event will be contributed to Legacy, and further development of the bike path.
Event organiser Doug Reckord said it was an opportunity to introduce people to the ride.
“Only the brave and the foolish are riding alongside that road at the moment, because it is a very narrow, high traffic road,” he said.
“But I think once people experience it, it will become something they want to do on a regular basis.”
In its current condition, the road is not safe for cyclists to use, so traffic control services are being hired to direct cyclist safely along the road for the event.
Mr Record rides along Tathra Rd two or three times a week, and has identified problem areas for cyclists.
“Any areas that have little or no shoulder, especially on hill or curve, pose a real danger for cyclists,” he said.
The stretch between the cattle crossing and Darcy Lane in Jellat Jellat and the descent into Bega before reaching the roundabout at South East Regional Hospital were the most dangerous points, according to Mr Reckord.
“Cars are travelling at 100km per hour and if you’ve got a bus and a truck passing each other at the same time, there’s no room left for a bike too,” he said.
He added that ideally the bike path would be built off the road between Jellat Jellat and Kalaru, because of low visibility created by the winding road.
Once the cycle path is built, the Bega Tathra Safe Ride group hopes the event will become an annual fundraiser for the community.
”It would be great to see it on the community calendar, its a great way for people to do something active and healthy together,” Mr Reckord said.
The community bike ride takes off from Lawrence Park in Tathra at 9am on Sunday, September 24, and the group will ride 16km, finishing at the Bega Showground.
Tickets for the event can be booked at trybooking.com. Kids aged 9-13 ride free.
