The Bermi Hippies presented a musical skit “The Times they are a-changing”. What was going on in Helen’s backyard was enough to bring back memories to many of the ladies present!
Serenity arrives to help Helen’s mum cope with the “generation gap”. The performers sang four numbers from the 60’s accompanied by Paula Rumble on keyboard. The ladies really enjoyed getting into the groove!
Who deserves pampering?
If you would like to see some great community spirit in action, then drop into the Pamper Me event this Saturday, August 26, where you will see local volunteers and carers enjoying some well-deserved Pampering. The event will be held at the Bega Valley Regional Learning Centre (behind Lakeview Hotel) from 9am to 2pm.
Recently Julie Novotny form Sapphire Coast Business Networking asked the general public to nominate someone that they felt deserved some free pampering at this weekend’s event.
She was astounded by the response and as a result 15 nominees will be pampered. The list included people that have always given to others, either as volunteers or looking after sick loved ones, but have asked nothing in return.
Julie set about finding sponsors to help cover the costs of pampering the nominees. Again the community spirit shone through and she has been able to find the support among local businesses to help with this venture.
So if you want to join in and say your own personal thanks, then you can do so by going along and supporting all the sponsors, nominees and local exhibitors that have helped to make this event possible.
For more details about this event contact Julie Novotny on 0429 970 150 or check out the website www.scbnetworking.com.au

Cobargo CWA
Cobargo CWA recently held their International Day which was the culmination of a year’s study of Nepal. Their guest speaker, Wilma Chinnock gave an outline of the difficulties of life in Nepal and the need for tourism to support their economy. The students of Cobargo Public School also attended and were treated to a talk on the difficulties Mrs Chinnock encountered as she climbed to Base Camp of Mt. Everest.
The children also spoke on various aspects of life, culture, geography and history of Nepal and their research was impressive.
Cobargo CWA also held a discussion with Community Housing for Older Women, (CHOW) about trying to find affordable community based housing for older women with limited resources.
The reason this is a problem is that there are a high proportion of women in the population who are on their own, have limited or insufficient pension/superannuation and therefore cannot afford their own property in the area.
They are not candidates for aged residential care and do not want the restrictions of formally managed retirement options (e.g. villages or homes). Cobargo CWA will continue to work with CHOW in an effort to help find solutions.
Sustainable House Day
Sustainable House Day is on Sunday, September 17, 2017. It provides an opportunity for people to visit some of Australia’s leading green homes – ones that are environmentally friendly, cheaper to run and more comfortable to live in.
Alan Burdon and Fiona Kotvojs’s home in Dignams Creek is part if this. The home is made from rammed earth and straw bale.
This home is completely off-grid and uses solar power for electricity, a masonry heater for heating and wood stove (with gas cooktop) for cooking. All water used is rainwater.
The house includes compostable toilets and reuses grey water through the orchard.
If you are interested in finding out more about these, come and visit. In addition, the Rural Fire Service will be discussing ways to improve the safety of rural properties and your home.
The home will open from 10am to 4pm. For further details, register athttp://sustainablehouseday.com/subscriber-registration/ or phone Alan and Fiona on 64936080.

This will be held on Sunday, August 27 at 2pm. Our guest speaker will be Robert Whiter from Eden. His very interesting talk will be on the Far South Coast Sleeper Cutters, which also includes the boats which carried the sleepers to far away places, sometimes very far away places. Stay for afternoon tea, and have a look around the Old Court House and cells.
Bega CWA soup day
The CWA Bega Branch had a very successful fun soup day recently and donated $300 to the Bake for Babies project. Jenny Rees was the lucky door prize winner and the raffle was won by Michelle Russell. We were delighted to receive $1000 from the Bega Valley Shire Councils Club Grants towards the sanding of our hall floor. Thank you. The handicraft members made 30 toiletry bags for the Women's Refuge and a representative will be attending our general meeting next Tuesday, August 29, at 10.30am in our CWA Hall in Church Street, Bega. Members and visitors are most welcome.
