David Howard of Tathra and Wendy Cook of Kalaru have both been recognised by their community for their contributions. 

Mr Howard is the treasurer of the Tathra Sea Eagles Aussie Rules Club, but has lifted the role to a new level. 

Alongside managing the club’s finances, Mr Howard coaches the ladies team, runs the Friday night raffles and was instrumental in starting up the first juniors team at the club in 11 years. 

Mr Howard has generously contributed to the club despite a number of health issues that have affected both him and his wife, Andrea. 

Ms Cook could be the biggest animal lover on the Far South Coast. 

As the welfare officer at the Animal Welfare League of NSW’s Far South Coast branch, Ms Cook is responsible for rescuing and re-homing pets, and cares for the animals on her own property.  

It is estimated she has re-homed over 610 animals since joining the team in 2009, and has brought the Bega Valley Shire Pound’s euthanasia rate down to the lowest in all of NSW. 

The Regional Achievement and Community Volunteering Awards acknowledge the efforts of individuals, communities and businesses in rural and regional locations. 

Other nominations in the Bega Valley include Merimbula's Lynne Koerbin for her efforts in establishing the carers accommodation project at the South East Regional Hospital, and music group The Wobbles for their Music Evolves Memories program designed for dementia patients. 

Judging for the volunteer award commences on September 20, and awards are presented on November 10.
