In a pilot program launched by Focus Ability Services with the committed support of the Bermagui Breakers SCAFL club, 11 young children with disabilities have enjoyed Aussie rules training nights since April.
Fran Trenerry from Focus Ability said the Kickability program was designed to bridge the gap to children with disabilities, felt particularly in the sporting field.
“It was phenomenal,” she said. “These kids they just rocked on and loved every part of it – they just kept giving. It was amazing, they all had mates and were all equal on the paddock.”
The inclusion and enjoyment was felt by the parents as well. “We all just don’t want it to end,” she said.
There are already plans afoot to run the program again next year with the support of the Breakers, but in the meantime Focus Ability is planning all-abilities cricket and a Nippers program for the summer months.
