The South East Regional Hospital has reported a spike in the number of locals coming through their doors with flu like symptoms.

There has been a 20 per cent rise in presentations to the hospital’s emergency department in recent days, which staff have attributed to people arriving with signs of influenza. 

SERH Director of Medical Services, Dr Don Cave said staying at home in bed is often the best approach.

“If you are showing signs of the flu, it’s important you stay at home,” he said.

“It’s best to have plenty of rest, keep warm and hydrated.” 

Mr Cave reminded residents that antibiotics do not provide effective treatment against cold and flu, and recommends the influenza vaccination instead.

“Vaccination is the best protection against seasonal influenza, those eligible for a free vaccine should make an appointment with their local doctor as soon as possible,” he said. 

People suffering from chronic illness are more vulnerable to the effects of influenza. Mr Cave urged those suffering from distress and shortness of breath to see their doctor for treatment.

Mr Cave and hospital staff urged locals to follow the same rules as every other flu season, wash your hands, avoid people who may be sick and cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing.
