Tathra’s junior football coordinator Dave Howard said there is a real buzz around the club at the moment and there’s a lot to celebrate. The club successfully relaunched the Auskick and Under 11 teams this year and will host an Under 13s team next season.
“That’s 75 boys and girls and their families joining and enjoying our family club,” Howard said. “Add to that the success of our much loved woman’s team the Eaglettes, and our successful men’s teams, and you have sport for all the family.”
Howard said the family gala day is expected to blend the thrill of footy with the fun of a carnival. There will be a free jumping castle, as well as popcorn, fairy floss, slushies and home made lemonade on sale. Along with the regular canteen fare, a coffee barista will also be on hand.
“A short video from drone footage will be made to capture the day. so don’t forget to smile,” Howard said.
The day starts at 9am with the first of six games, and ends around 4.30pm. Tathra will host teams from Merimbula and Bermagui. At 3.30pm the club’s sponsors will be treated to a free homemade afternoon tea in appreciation of their support. Club President Greg Coman invited the local community to join in the fun of the day.
The start of a six-week AFL Sporting Schools program in Tathra Primary School on Monday 31 July is also worthy of celebration.
“I’m excited that 120 students from Tathra and Tanja Primary Schools can learn and experience AFL and get a ball each with no cost to the parents,” Howard said.
The program led by NSW/ACT AFL with the support of teachers and club volunteers will run for two hours each week and is made possible by an AFL Sporting Schools grant. The club will even host a free barbecue for participating students and volunteers at the end of the first and last session to show their appreciation.
