The competition is the first of its kind in Australia, drawing the attention of Fox Sports on the day, and former Wallaby Garry Pearse, who scored four tries in his nine Tests for Australia, was on hand to referee.

The Falcons’ U15 squad comprehensively beat the Canberra Vikings  30-5 in the first game of the day, while the U17 combined Falcons/Jindabyne squad, dubbed the 'Flying Piglets', hammered Daramalan 51-12.

Falcon Ashanti Kidwell has rugby blood flowing through her veins, and the 15-year-old is aiming for a professional career in the game.

Her father’s cousins are head coach of the New Zealand Kiwis David Kidwell, and All Blacks midfielder Sonny Bill Williams.

“It’s a really fun game that’s not like league, it just flows,” the Bega based U15 and U17 player said.

Her father Inia said the team had become a “big family”, and the players and coaching staff have created a strong club culture together.

“It was great to see a home game too, because the girls travel to Canberra all the time,” he said.

Pearse, who now lives in Bermagui, was all praise for the competition, and the talented players on show.

“It’s a whole new dimension in my rugby career,” he said.

“Seeing the excitement, passion and thrill these girls have got from playing rugby is fantastic.

“When you think about it, a number of years ago they were probably sitting at the dinner with dad and their brother talking about footy, and now their part of the conversation, it’s fantastic.”

Team coach Scott Harris has been the force behind a rise in popularity of the sport in the region, and has helped the careers of both Kezie Apps and Millie Boyle.

“We’re producing a lot of good rugby players, which is phenomenal for such a small place,” he said.

“The country kids aren’t afraid of being physical.”

With a dozen ACT Brumbies in the squad, the U17s were unstoppable in their 39 point demolition.
