Emulating their success of the 2015 Games, the Australian women's rugby sevens team won gold after a thrilling 31-5 victory over Canada on Friday morning. 

The Aussies went through the tournament undefeated, beating Bermuda, Trinidad and Tobago, Fiji and Wales before their encounter with Canada in the decider. 

In the gold medal match the Aussie girls started strong with Rose-Bennett opening up the scoring for her first of three tries before Canada hit back for five points. 

Rose-Bennett's second try came early in the second half, scooting over the line to keep Australia in the lead but it was her third that demonstrated her smart footwork, roaming off the wing to crash over the line.

Australian sevens youth girls head coach Dale Roberson said women's rugby had a strong future in Australia.

"I'm extremely proud of this team. We played a clinical game and defended really well to limit Canada to one try," Roberson said. 

"The girls were brilliant right throughout the tournament and the way they worked together to win the gold medal, it is a credit to the hard work every player put in."

"This couldn't have been done without the work of the State Unions who have continued to develop the Girls around the country before they came to National camp and shows that the future is very bright for Women's Rugby Sevens."

After the girls fly home, they will join the various University sides competing in the inaugural women's university sevens competition due to kick off late August.
