Nursing home visit
Four classes from Bega Valley Public School recently visited two of the local nursing homes – Casuarina and Hillgrove House – to sing some songs they had been learning especially for the event. The nursing homes provided morning tea while children sang and signed a range of songs for the residents.

One resident at Casuarina even played the piano for the children and they sang along. Pupils spent over an hour with the residents and went around and chatted with them afterwards.
Feedback from Hillgrove House was that the residents absolutely loved having the children there and especially that they spent time going around talking to them.
Far South Coast Writers
The Writers of the Far South Coast recently had a workshop with local author Melissa Pouliot. The workshop, titled How to get Buzz for your Book Launch, was very well received by attendees, with all the writers agreeing that it was extremely informative and entertaining.
“Thank you for offering this opportunity to meet and learn from Melissa,” Kerrin said. “Her insights and generosity in suggestions around establishing my brand and in networking as well as publicising the finished products provided such a wealth of heads up.”
All the writers said they were glad to have had the opportunity to work with Melissa and look forward to her book launch.

This is a place where community can gather and catch up while soaking up the sounds of our talented local musicians. So come one come all to this open mic afternoon where all musicians, poets, comedians and story tellers are encouraged to entertain the appreciative crowd in this relaxed and welcoming meeting place.
Bermagui fishing
A wonderful weekend fishing competition was the pleasure of the Bermagui Country Club Social Anglers Club. Members weighed in for the winners to be announced on Sunday at the lunch. Taking out the off-shore was Ian, while wife Elaine won the on-shore. The heaviest mixed bag was Trevor’s pleasure.
President Fran was very appreciative of the delightful casserole lunch supplied by the ladies, advising all members of the Christmas break-away in November at the Wallaga Lake Caravan Park. Members’ bookings will be made asap. The club offers a special lunch on the Saturday and of course, there’ll be a fishing comp. on the Sunday.
The raffle was won by Dawn with the runner-up a winner for Shirley. August weekend fishing comp is from Friday the 11th to 12.30pm Sunday the 13th with a BBQ get-together lunch.
Nethercote market
It’s the 34th Nethercote Seasonal Produce Market this Saturday, July 22 and market organisers invite you to come along and boost your immune system with the best of winter’s fresh, local produce from 8am until noon.
The ever popular, fantastically priced community fruit and veg stall, will be a glorious vista of winter citrus with enough oranges, mandarins and limes to pump up your vitamin C levels. Get in early to grab the best pumpkin for thick, delicious soups.
Stock up on award-winning Australia’s Oyster Coast local oysters, Rocky Hall wine, Tilba cheese, Palarang organic meat (try John Walker’s brilliant home made pies), Tom (aka Crazy Ranga) Burns’ yummy sauces and cordials, Sam Groppler’s local honey products, hazelnuts and pecans from Imlay Nuts and Kay Saarinen’s home grown organics skin creams and ointments.
Olga and Ernie (aka Fatto en Casa) will have sumptuous cakes and pastries including croissants, quiche and tarts. Bread-lovers who can’t resist a crusty loaf to mop up winter stews and soups can choose from Wild Rye breads from Pambula, or try out the artisan breads from Wheatley Lane Bread of Candelo.
The Nethercote Residents Association will cook breakfast on the barbecue, with proceeds supporting further Nethercote Hall improvements.
We’ll have some of the yummiest cakes you can find on a Saturday morning to enjoy with plunger coffee, while listening to live music from Red Heart Blue, led by Jackson Fisher from Tathra on keyboards, guitar and vocals, accompanied by Corine Masliah on vocals, and Chris Ralfs on double bass. If you love Elton John and Bill Joel, you’ll love this easy listening jazz, and may have already enjoyed it at local venues including Dulcies and Merimbula Markets.
Join Lynn and Christine from Oz Harvest Sapphire Coast, who rescue food from the major supermarkets around town and direct it to those in need, at the 11am cooking demo in the kitchen. Their cooking demo will be based on this week’s rescued food, and the recipe will be up on our website (www.nethercoteproducemarket.com) later this week.
After a long time away from the market, we welcome back Glen and Gretel from Black Basalt Beef and Lamb. Their beef and lamb is grown just up the road at Lochiel. Glen’s gluten and preservative free plain beef sausages are sure to be a winner.
Trivia night
Friends of the Old Bega Hospital will be hosting a fun-filled trivia night at the Bega Country Club at Tarraganda on Saturday, July 29, starting at 7pm. The inimitable Andrew Ogilive will be quiz master and Rhonda Jones is the person who will set all the questions and games.
The cost is $10 a person and there are tables of eight. Bookings may be made by ringing Claire Lupton on 6492 2570 or emailing clairelupton@bigpond.com. For those who want to come and can't make up the eight, just ring Claire and let her know how many you have, or even if you just want to come alone, and she will fit you into a table.
Bring your own nibbles and there will be an auction of delicious cakes for supper with tea and coffee. Drinks will be at club prices. There are lucky door prizes and spot prizes throughout the night. All proceeds go towards the Old Bega Hospital restoration fund.
That's the one that was gutted by fire in 2004 and is to be restored as a cultural and community centre, not the Bega District Hospital which is so often confused with then historic ruins and now could be called the middle Bega Hospital.
Parkinson’s support
The Bega Valley Parkinson support group held its July meeting at the Bega Country Club with two speech therapists as guest speakers. The speakers covered swallowing and speech which are both problems with those living with Parkinson's. Several of the members present including the president were helped by the presentation. The president was delighted to advise the meeting that a Parkinson seminar would be held on August 7 at Bega Community Centre. The seminar is open to the public, people living with Parkinson's and health professionals.
