Fire and darkness are used to celebrate these twin aspects of the festival – fire in the form of the children’s lanterns as they walk down to the oval singing, in the Spiral Lantern Walk where every child carries a candle, the warmth of a mug of hot soup eaten together with family and friends and then the happiness of a crackling bonfire.
This year, for the first time and as part of Mumbulla’s 30th birthday celebrations, a group of ex-pupils participated in the Spiral Lantern Walk. They also created their own lanterns to take part.
Being all together in the darkness and cold of the evening always brings a sense of reverence to the festival. This is one of the reasons this is such a beloved festival for all who have participated in it over the nearly 30 years of the school.
